IN-PERSON: Erik Larson in Lancaster: The Splendid and the Vile

The Midtown Scholar Bookstore is honored to welcome #1 New York Times bestselling author Erik Larson to Lancaster for an in-person event on his acclaimed work of history, The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz. This event will take place at the Gardner Theatre at the Lancaster Country Day School, which is located at 725 Hamilton Rd, Lancaster, PA 17603. Larson will be in conversation with WITF's Scott LaMar, Host & Executive Producer of WITF's daily radio program Smart Talk.

This event is presented in partnership with WITFLancaster Country Day School, and Lancaster Public Library.

This is a ticketed, in-person event. Every ticket includes a signed, paperback copy of The Splendid and the Vile. Limited seating and tickets available. Doors will open at 6:15pm, and the event will begin at 7:00pm. Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required, and masks must be worn during the event. All books will be pre-signed; there will be no personalization requests or signing line with Erik Larson.

Vaccination Requirements:

You must show proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for entrance to this event. We will accept either a physical vaccination card, digital card, or a photo of the card on your phone. Per the CDC, people are considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine.

  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required

  • Masks are required

There will be opportunities to buy additional signed copies of The Splendid and the Vile, as well as signed copies of Erik Larson's previously published books.

About the Speakers:

Erik Larson is the author of six New York Times bestsellers, most recently The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz, which examines how Winston Churchill and his “Secret Circle” went about surviving the German air campaign of 1940-41. Erik’s The Devil in the White City is set to be a Hulu limited series; his In the Garden of Beasts is under option by Tom Hanks, for a feature film. He recently published an audio-original ghost story, No One Goes Alone, which has been optioned by Netflix. Erik lives in Manhattan with his wife, who is a writer and retired neonatologist; they have three grown daughters.

Scott LaMar has worked in both radio and television for more than four decades. Currently, LaMar is the Host and Executive Producer of the daily Smart Talk news and public affairs program on WITF-FM, 89.5 & 93.3 in Harrisburg, Pa.

Previously, LaMar was WITF TV’s Sr. Public Affairs producer and produced the station’s award-winning weekly public affairs TV program Smart Talk. LaMar was a regular contributor to BBC World News TV before and after the 2020 U.S. Presidential election. The American Society of Civil Engineers honored LaMar with their national Excellency in Journalism award in 2020. LaMar was the only recipient of the award nationally.

He has won more than a dozen Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcast Awards since 2000 and has been nominated for five Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards. LaMar and Smart Talk have been recognized throughout the Central Pennsylvania community including ADVOZ Lancaster’s first “Dignity in Dialogue Award”, the South-Central Assembly’s “Regional Citizen Award” and was named a “Humanitarian Hero” by The Humane Society of the United States/Pennsylvania.

A native of Coatesville, Pa., LaMar has also worked as a broadcast news anchor, sports play-by-play announcer and manager.
