“Assistant Manager, New Books”

Full-Time Retail, Management-Track Position: 38-43 hours/week

Schedule: 5 days/week, including Saturdays &/or Sundays.

The Midtown Scholar Bookstore seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic, and hard-working Full-Time, Indie-Bookstore Assistant Manager for New Books to play a leading role in customer-facing retail operations, including creative collaboration with other members of the management team; daily supervision of bookstore/cafe employees; facilities management; in-store and online inventory management; email correspondence and website maintenance; shipping and receiving; and ensuring an excellent customer experience.

Professional managerial or supervisory experience with a proven commitment to customer service and staff development is essential. Bookstore industry knowledge is beneficial. This role requires strong interpersonal, writing, and computer skills, as well as familiarity with retail POS and inventory systems. Non-salaried compensation will be commensurate with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

●      College degree with a minimum of three years’ relevant professional experience

●      Available to work days and weekends

●      Awareness of current publishing trends, including knowledge of different genres

●      Aptitude for collaborative work as part of a dedicated team

●      Self-starter with excellent judgment and time management

●      Proven track record of positive customer service with a diverse public

●      Exceptional verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills

●      Fastidiousness in record keeping, administrative tasks, and office organization

●      Proficiency in MS Word & Excel

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary duties of all New Books team members include inventory receiving, shelving, and merchandising; online inventory listing and e-commerce order processing; book moving, lifting and carrying heavy boxes, pushing and rolling carts, and loading/unloading boxes; used book acquisition, pricing and listing; order fulfillment and book packaging; email correspondence; phone calls with customers; handselling books; and general bookstore operations.

General retail tasks include greeting and assisting customers; handling customer inquiries; book stocking, sorting, and shelving; store merchandising; light maintenance and cleaning duties; point-of-sale cash register operations; cafe/beverage service; moving book carts; box moving; and set-up/tear-down for special events.

Opportunities for advancement will be based on interest and skills. Management training and professional development is available.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

●     Ability to climb, bend, crouch, stoop, and lift boxes up to 40 lbs.; ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time; ability to sit for extended periods of time; ability to use hands and arms to operate a keyboard and telephone, manipulate small, large, and heavy objects, and engage in repetitive motion activities; and ability to adapt to the varying temperatures, bright or dim lighting, and dustiness of book and box storage areas.

●     Daily requirements include moving, boxing, and unboxing books, pushing book carts, climbing stairs, and lifting and carrying heavy boxes. The workplace requires going up and down stairs and maneuvering narrow aisles and hallways, with the diverse sounds, smells, and distractions of open-plan work areas and public gathering places.
