“Bookstore/Cafe Team Member”

This is a future opening.

Full-Time or Part-Time Retail Position: 30-40 hours/week.

Schedule: 4-5 days/week. This may include 1-2 evenings/week and at least one weekend day.

The Midtown Scholar Bookstore-Cafe seeks a hard-working, dependable self-starter who is focused on customers’ needs and enjoys a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment to join our retail bookstore, café, and events team. This is an entry-level, hourly-wage position.

Location: Midtown Harrisburg

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tasks include greeting and assisting customers; addressing customer inquiries; café beverages and food service; book stocking, sorting, and shelving; store merchandising; light maintenance and cleaning; point-of-sale cashier; moving book carts; box moving; set-up and tear-down for public events; author hospitality; and helping with public programs.

Additional duties may include inventory receiving, used book pricing and listing, hand-selling, and general bookstore operations. Coffee education and certification is available through Counter Culture Coffee. Training and certification is also available through the American Booksellers Association’s Professional Booksellers School. Opportunities for advancement based on interest and skills.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

●     For this position, a high school diploma and a college degree or equivalent work experience is preferred.

●     Ability to climb, bend, crouch, stoop, and lift boxes up to 40 lbs.; ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time; ability to use hands and arms to operate a keyboard and telephone, manipulate small, large, and heavy objects, and engage in repetitive motion activities. Daily tasks include climbing stairs, pushing book carts, and carrying boxes.

●     The workplace requires going up and down stairs and maneuvering narrow aisles and hallways, with the diverse sounds, smells, and distractions of a public gathering place.
