Full-Time Position: 40-43 hours/week

Schedule: 5 days/week including Sundays, plus occasional weeknight evenings. Schedule subject to change based on store needs.

The Midtown Scholar Bookstore seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic, and hard-working Full-Time Retail Used Books Manager to play a leading role in both customer-facing retail operations and online order fulfillment, including inventory database management; book acquisition, sorting, and listing; overseeing the retail used books team in shelf organization, maintenance, and restocking; and ensuring an excellent customer experience.

Professional bookstore managerial experience with a commitment to customer service and staff development is required. Previous work in the book trade is essential. This role requires strong interpersonal, writing, and computer skills, as well as familiarity with retail accounting practices, key business indicators, and logistics. The position includes eligibility to participate in the company’s small-group health care plan. Hourly compensation will be commensurate with book industry experience.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

●      College degree with a minimum of four years’ relevant professional experience

●      Available to work afternoons/evenings and weekends

●      Experience with public speaking and crowd management

●      Awareness of current publishing trends, including knowledge of different genres

●      Aptitude for collaborative work as part of a dedicated team

●      Self-starter with excellent judgment and time management

●      Proven track record of positive customer service with a diverse public

●      Exceptional verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills

●      Fastidiousness in record keeping, administrative tasks, and office organization

●      Proficiency in MS Word & Excel

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

●      Ability to climb, bend, crouch, stoop, and lift boxes up to 40 lbs.; ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time; ability to use hands and arms to operate a keyboard and telephone, manipulate small, large, and heavy objects, and engage in repetitive motions.

●      The workplace requires going up and down stairs and maneuvering narrow aisles and hallways, with the diverse sounds, smells, and distractions of a public gathering place.
